Participate in the GIVE Northern Virginia Initiative

Understanding the impact of the new tax law on charitable giving

The Community Foundation for Northern Virginia is in year two of their GIVE Northern Virginia initiative, which seeks to help raise awareness and understanding about the impact of the new tax law on individual charitable giving in Northern Virginia. The goal is to gather and analyze quarterly anonymized data on charitable giving by individuals from participating nonprofits for 2019, and compare the data to 2017 and 2018 levels. The Community Foundation will share its data analysis with all participants. The Foundation invites all Northern Virginia nonprofits, as well as nonprofits headquartered elsewhere but with operations and programs serving Northern Virginia, to participate in 2019.

Participation in GIVE Northern Virginia means this: Within 30 days of the close of each quarter during calendar 2019, you will provide 2018 and 2019 totals – only two data points – on total individual charitable giving to your organization for that quarter. The data will be collected and tallied by the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia, anonymized, and shared with all participating nonprofits for shared understanding and external communication purposes. In addition, your organization’s name will be included in the list of participating nonprofits in the GIVE Northern Virginia initiative. This is a one-year commitment during calendar 2019 to provide this data.

America’s Charities, as supporters of GIVE Northern Virginia, encourages our members with programs or services in Northern Virginia to participate. While many factors affect individual charitable giving, including the strength of both national and local economies, a year over year comparison of individual giving data by quarter is nevertheless instructive and provides us all with some understanding of the impact of the new tax law on charitable giving.

If you would like to participate, please click this link and fill out your information. All participating nonprofits will receive a link to the first quarterly survey on April 1st, and again each subsequent quarter, along with a password (the same password for all participants) asking you to input and submit the two data points described above. All data is completely anonymized and authenticated by survey monkey, meaning that it has no affiliation with your name, your organizations name, or any IP address.
