Humane Society of the U.S. Responds to Hurricane Irene Situation

The Humane Society of the United States’ Animal Rescue Team is on the ground in coastal North Carolina and Vermont to operate emergency shelters in those states to house animals displaced by Hurricane Irene.
The HSUS was called in to assist in Pamlico County, N.C., and is working alongside law enforcement to rescue and provide shelter for displaced pets. The HSUS also set up a tip line for residents in Pamlico County to report missing animals or report animals in need of rescue. That toll-free number is 877-822-3343.
“Thousands of residents have lost their homes in Pamlico County and are living without power or clean water,” said Kimberley Alboum, North Carolina state director for The HSUS. “The HSUS is here to help by creating a safe place for their four-legged family members in their time of need.”
In North Carolina, The HSUS and volunteers from Hello Bully established a large-capacity emergency pet shelter at the Craven County Fair Grounds to house rescued animals as well as pets from families who have evacuated without a place to keep their animals. The shelter is also available for pets of first-responders who are on extended duty in the devastated area. PetSmart Charities will be providing supplies for the shelter and tools to aid The HSUS in rescue efforts out in the field.
In Vermont, The HSUS is working with municipal, Red Cross and National Guard officials to offer assistance to people who had to evacuate their homes because of historic flooding in the state. The HSUS has an emergency shelter set up near Brattleboro and the facility is open for pets brought in by families displaced by flooding. The HSUS and the Vermont Companion Animal Neutering Clinic are also offering to provide pet food and supplies to evacuated families.
“The HSUS is proud to work with other organizations to help the people and animal victims of the flooding in Vermont,” said Joanne Bourbeau, Vermont senior state director for The HSUS. “Our team will be on hand to provide pet shelter and supplies while the community recovers from Hurricane Irene.”
