The Shepherd's Table
Shepherd's Table first opened on December 16, 1983 in a modest house behind the First Baptist Church in Silver Spring. We are proud to serve Montgomery County, MD and the Washington Metro region as the oldest and most comprehensive resource center for people experiencing homelessness or poverty.
In our 33 year history, we have never missed an evening meal, providing a healthy, nutritious meal through compassion and hospitable service. Through the end of September 2016, we have already served more than 40,000 evening and brunch meals, and anticipate serving more than 71,000 meals before the end of the year. As the community's need has grown, we have continued to be a place where people who are hungry can walk through our doors and be provided with a nutritious meal and other necessary services.
More than 1,400 volunteers partner with us throughout the year, sharing their time, talent and huge hearts to bring our mission to life, and to offer our clients and dinner guest's warmth and friendship.
Our Resource Center assists more than 100 clients each day, providing basic services such as mail service, tokens, information and referral, crisis intervention, immigration assistance and other basic needs. Additionally, the resource staff work in partnership with medical clinics in providing health care to the homeless. Prescription assistance is also given to those who are uninsured, and so far this year, 324 prescriptions have already been filled.
Our Clothes Closet provides donated apparel, shoes and accessories to more than 100 individuals every week. All the clothing is in excellent condition and helps to enhance the dignity and well-being of our guests and their families.
Our Eye Clinic is the only free clinic in Montgomery County, and as of September 2016, we have already administered more than 190 eye exams and distributed 189 prescription eye glasses this year.
Shepherd's Table is a valuable resource for individuals in need, and its work is accomplished through the efforts of a dedicated staff, hardworking volunteers, and several thousand donors. We have established strong partnerships with local businesses, organizations, schools and places of worship. These partnerships benefit not only Shepherd's Table, but also those who give generously of their time, talent and financial resources.
