Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Mid-Atlantic (Make A Wish Mid Atlantic)
Make-A-Wish was founded in 1980 with the mission to create life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. A wish experience can transform the lives of sick children, families and entire communities, not only at the time of the wish, but for years to come. Shortly after the founding of Make-A-Wish, local chapters began to emerge across the nation with the goal of reaching even more children and communities.
Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic grants the wishes of children with critical illnesses who reside in Maryland, Washington, DC and northern Virginia. Since our chapter’s founding in 1983, we have given the gift of a wish to nearly 10,000 local children fighting life-threatening medical conditions such as cancer, pediatric AIDS, cystic fibrosis, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and heart disease.
A child's wish can fall into one of five categories:
- I wish...to be (eg. a zookeeper, a firefighter, a baker)
- I wish...to meet (e.g., a favorite celebrity or athlete)
- I wish...to have (e.g., a computer, a playset, a puppy)
- I wish...to go (e.g., to a theme park, Hawaii, a major sporting event)
- I wish...to give (e.g., a new set of uniforms to their classmates)
A wish granted creates a memorable experience for a child fighting a critical illness and gives the child something positive to think about instead of medical treatments and hospital visits.
