Recap: Hurricane Dorian Disaster Relief and Recovery

As the first major storm of the 2019 Atlantic hurricane season, Hurricane Dorian made landfall in the Bahamas at the end of August, wreaking havoc as a Category 5 hurricane with winds reaching 185 mph. The slow-moving storm then traveled up the East Coast of the U.S. as a Category 2 hurricane leaving behind a path of destruction and flooding.

Several donors stepped up to support communities impacted by Hurricane Dorian by contributing to the America’s Charities Disaster Recovery Fund. Donations to the America’s Charities Disaster Recovery Fund are disbursed equally between a select group of America’s Charities’ vetted nonprofit members: Feeding America, Feed the Children, and PetSmart Charities. Addressing a variety of disaster recovery needs, here are some of the ways each of these nonprofits have been providing relief to help those affected by Hurricane Dorian:

Feed the Children:

Feed the Children has been working hand-in-hand with its community partners, Reach Out America, 21 Reasons to Give, and House of Destiny to distribute supplies in the U.S., as well as working with Operation Compassion to move critical provisions on barges into the storm-ravaged Bahamas. So far, the anti-hunger organization has provided more than 360,000 pounds of food, water, hygiene items, and cleaning supplies to those living in some of the hardest-hit areas.

PetSmart Charities:

PetSmart Charities has committed up to $1 million in grants to support designated responding agencies working on the front lines to help pets and pet families in need in the areas affected by Hurricane Dorian.

“The catastrophic damage in the Bahamas from Hurricane Dorian is immense, and we know relief agencies on the ground need supplies to feed, house and provide veterinary care to pets,” said Deborah Turcott, acting president of PetSmart Charities. “We know recovery can take time, and with the support of our generous donors, it’s our hope that this funding from PetSmart Charities will help provide essential care to pet families and displaced pets in the areas impacted by this devastating storm.”

Feeding America:

The Feeding America network of food banks is responding by helping communities in the United States and impacted food banks along the coast have been supporting shelters to assist those displaced by the storm, gathering resources with local emergency feeding partners and taking additional steps to prepare for the impacts.

Donations to the America’s Charities Disaster Recovery Fund will allow each of these nonprofits to continue providing relief to those impacted by Hurricane Dorian’s storm system in the coming months and equip them to support relief and recovery efforts immediately when the next major hurricane strikes.
