Join Feed the Children’s Fight to Defeat Hunger and Help Kids be Kids
Hunger. It has crept into our cities. It has found a way into our neighborhoods. It’s affecting the lives of millions of men, women and children domestically and internationally, cementing itself as a real threat to our well-being.
See, hunger isn’t prejudiced. It doesn’t care about gender, age or ethnicity. Hunger doesn’t know if you are homeless or a part of the working class. It only has one job, and it performs it very well.
Yet somehow, the issue of hunger has gone largely undetected. Many of us are not aware of just how many people are affected by hunger each year.
Consider this for a moment: in the United States alone, 1 in 9 people will go to bed on an empty stomach. That’s 800 million people that fall asleep each night feeling hungry.
The sad thing is, many of those 800 million individuals are children. Statistically, 1 in 6 children suffer from chronic hunger – and that’s just here in the United States. Globally, these numbers are much higher. It’s likely why every 10 seconds a child dies from hunger-related issues. In fact, hunger kills more people than AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined.
Did you know the world produces 17% more food than it needs? 17% more.
The problem is clear: in a world full of food, people are still losing their lives because they don’t have enough to eat.
Why Hunger Affects So Many
So, why does hunger affect millions of people each year?
The answer is poverty. Like hunger, poverty isn’t prejudiced. Those affected by it often go without critical resources needed for survival, such as: food, clean water, healthcare and education.
One billion children around the world live in poverty, meaning many of their families are caught in a cycle: living in poverty brings hunger and disease, while living with hunger and disease prolongs poverty.
Naturally, those in poverty aren’t impoverished because they want to be. They just have no way out.
Many of those who experience hunger never finished school, so they can’t read well or earn a living wage. And while most people work very hard, the jobs available to them often don’t pay enough to make a living.
Here at Feed the Children, we believe something has to be done. We’ve made it our mission to provide hope and resources for those without life’s essentials. It’s a part of who we are. It’s in the very DNA of our organization. And with the support of our generous donors, volunteers and corporate partners we will stop at nothing to ensure we do everything in our power to never deviate from that mission.
How We Defeat Hunger
At Feed the Children, we understand how serious the issue of hunger is. We also understand if the issue isn’t brought into the light, it will continue to destroy the lives of those it touches.
To ensure we continue to raise awareness, we have strategically placed facilities across the United States (and in 10 countries internationally) to fight back.
In the United States, we focus on providing food and essential items for families as well as backpacks, school supplies and books to help provide a stronger educational foundation.
Around the world, we also focus on giving food and essential items to families as well as backpacks, school supplies and books for children.
However, we also focus on addressing issues such as poor water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH), as this leads to infection and disease, which results in undernutrition. Additionally, we are currently working with Vitamin Angels to administer vitamin supplements and deworming medication. Finally, we seek to educate thousands of men and women about the importance of good nutrition and food preparation.
It’s truly amazing to see lives being affected by the work we do. And, each year that number continues to grow.
Our staff, corporate partners, donors and volunteers willingly join to fight the hunger problem we face. And you can too.
