Iron Hill and CureSearch’s 11-year Partnership Results in Nearly $200k for Children’s Cancer Research

CureSearch for Children’s Cancer is a national non-profit foundation whose mission is to end childhood cancer by driving targeted and innovative research with measurable results in an accelerated time frame. One of the ways CureSearch is working to accomplish this mission is through partnerships with businesses like Iron Hill Brewery and Restaurants. We recently interviewed CureSearch about this partnership.  Below is a Q&A from that conversation:

What Kind of Partnership do You Have with Iron Hill Brewery and Restaurants?

The founders of Iron Hill Restaurant and Brewery, home brewers Kevin Finn and Mark Edelson, and restauranteur Kevin Davies, are intimately aware of the impact of childhood cancer as Mark’s wife, Maureen, is a Pediatric Oncologist practicing at Nemours/Alfred I. DuPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Delaware.  She did her fellowship work at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC, under Dr. Greg Reaman, inaugural Chairman of the Children’s Oncology Group. Recognizing the importance of children’s cancer research, Edelson and his co-founders were inspired to begin supporting CureSearch for Children’s Cancer.

In 2004, as part of the on-going fight against cancer, Iron Hill developed a signature dessert, The Double Chocolate Hill.  The dessert boasts moist chocolate cake with a warm peanut butter center, covered in a creamy chocolate ganache and accompanied by a scoop of vanilla ice cream.  Iron Hill committed to donate $0.75 from the sale of each Double Chocolate Hill dessert to CureSearch.

What Do You Hope to Accomplish Through This Partnership and What Have Been the Results so Far?

“Our goal in supporting a national charity is to use the success of our business to give back in the most meaningful way possible. When looking for a charity, it is important that it has wide impact on all of the communities we serve and that it maximizes the use of the funds towards direct impact, not administration and overhead. We have found CureSearch to be a great partner to meet these goals.”  Mark Edelson, Co-Founder, Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant

CureSearch 43 kids diagnosed with cancer each dayEvery day, 43 children are diagnosed with cancer in the United States. The dessert promotion between Iron Hill Brewery and CureSearch raises public awareness that cancer is the leading cause of death by disease among children. It also provides much needed funds to drive innovative research to end children’s cancer.

This year, 2015, marks 11 years of support from Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant and its 11 locations (soon to be 12) across the mid-Atlantic. All Iron Hill Brewery and Restaurants participate in this unique dessert fundraiser for CureSearch for Children’s Cancer.  Since the partnership began in 2004, Iron Hill Brewery and Restaurants has donated close to $200,000 to support CureSearch for Children’s Cancer. The donations are used to fund clinical trials that seek to discover new cancer cures and save children’s lives.
