Few Women at High-risk for Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer Receive Genetic Counseling

Despite recommendations from the federal government that women at high-risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer be offered genetic counseling and testing at no out of pocket cost, a new study finds that few women are offered these services. Researchers at the Virginia Commonwealth University Massey Cancer Center found that over the course of two years, only one woman in their clinic who qualified for the free services was offered them, despite over twenty meeting the criteria. These results further confirm the need for physician and patient education about hereditary breast and ovarian cancer.
