On April 24th, America’s Charities is hosting #GivingUnderTheInfluence, a symposium focused on key trends, solutions, and strategies shaping the future of employee engagement and workplace giving. In this series of posts, we’ll introduce you to the panelists who will lead the #GivingUnderTheInfluence Symposium discussion.

Meet Panelist: Tom Watson

Tom Watson - April 24 #GivingUnderTheInfuence Symposium Panelist

  • President and Founder of CauseWired, a consulting firm advising clients on the social commons: nonprofits, foundations and companies.
  • Journalist, author, and consultant who has worked at the confluence of media technology and social change for two decades.
  • Social Ventures blog contributor for Forbes

  • Author of CauseWired: Plugging In, Getting Involved, Changing the World (Wiley, 2008 ) a best-selling book that chronicles the rise of online social activism.
  • Adjunct professor in the master’s program of New York University’s George Heyman Center for Philanthropy and Fundraising.

A frequent speaker and commentator on trends and issues related to media, technology and society, Tom Watson has appeared on shows ranging from CNN’s Moneyline to NPR’s All Things Considered, and has spoken at venues such as the Global Philanthropy Forum and Clinton Global Initiative.

When America’s Charities recently asked Tom how he thinks our digital culture will transform workplace giving and employee engagement, Tom replied, “One word above all others: choice. You can find and support any charity online, and you can take part of many communities and hear many stories. Choice is transforming workplace giving and shifting the emphasis from procedure and duty (“I gave at the office”) to real storytelling and impact.”

At the #GivingUnderTheInfluence Symposium on April 24, Tom Watson and other experts will lead a discussion about how shifting employee expectations and the empowering digital culture are transforming the traditional workplace giving model into a more engaging experience inside and outside the workplace walls.
