How One Backpack Equals One Child’s Success

AHC Inc. Back-to-School AppealCan you believe it’s time to start thinking about school again?

America’s Charities member AHC Inc., nonprofit developer of affordable housing in the mid-Atlantic region, wants to ensure that each and every child living in AHC’s affordable housing communities in Arlington and Falls Church shows up to elementary school on September 3rd with the supplies and tools they need to succeed.

Most of the children they serve are from low- and very low-income families, and it is difficult for their parents to provide all the school supplies they need.  AHC wants to make sure each child has a backpack filled with an ample supply of notebooks, paper, folders, pencils, crayons, colored markers, scissors and a ruler.  Showing up to school fully prepared sets the tone for the year to come.

Despite language barriers and difficult circumstances, children who participated in AHC’s award-winning after-school elementary programs have made significant gains in reading this past year. A whopping 94% improved their reading level by at least one full grade level and/or are reading at or above grade level.  This was not only the result of their hard work, but also the support of neighbors like you who want these children to succeed.

AHC’s Back-to-School Drive will help these children get off to a good start in September with the supplies they need to participate fully in the school day, and have the tools to do their homework well, too.  It costs AHC $18 to fully load a backpack.  With each dollar you contribute, they can leverage your donation by purchasing school supplies at special prices.

Help a child succeed this school year!
